Industry recovery scenarios and potential investment opportunities
Krish Prabhu -
Former CEO of Alcatel USA- Morgenthaler Venture Partner
keynote
abstract: In the aftermath of the biggest downturn in the
history of the Telecom industry, coupled with a slowdown in venture
investment across the board, there is general concern that recovery
may be long and difficult. It is the author's belief that recovery
will happen sooner rather than later and that over the next ten
years the inexorable transformation to an Internet based economy
will offer several opportunities for entrepreneurship. However,
picking the right opportunities and using capital judiciously, will
decide who wins and who does not.

did they learn from the last bubble bursting?
Where
do they see investor interest?
If
they had to predict, what's the next big thing?
Would
VCs actually be brave enough to fund the next big thing?

Business Efficiency through Software Automation
ABSTRACT
In today's increasing competitive economic climate businesses
are looking for ways to streamline and automate operations and increase
the top and the bottom line. The market has produced a myriad of
software offerings to automate various aspects of business operations.
However, the companies are faced with the decision of choosing best
of breed offerings from various vendors and integrating them, or
purchasing integrated suites from a single vendor. Moreover, they
are also faced with the decision of running such applications in
house or outsourcing various aspects of their operations. This panel
explores such solutions and the implications of adopting each of
these approaches.

Wireless
Communications and Technologies; Myth & Reality
ABSTRACT
More and more consumers are demanding anytime, anywhere access to
the Internet. Yet despite such research results and the high level
of VC interest in wireless technologies, enterprises have proven
to be laggards in the full-scale adoption of wireless communications.
This panel examines various wireless technologies including fixed
wireless, broadband satellite, wireless LANs and wireless WANs and
the role each will play in the trend towards seamless mobility.

Trends and issues from silicon processing to complex packaging
ABSTRACT
The semiconductor industry is changing with the increasing need
and overlap of silicon processing, assembly, test and EMS companies
as we move towards "system on a chip" and "system
on a package". Challenges in silicon processing go beyond the
traditional scaling -- we are concerned with a new set of structures
and materials for gates and interconnects. The cost and technology
"barrier of entry" for companies are also skyrocketing
as both packaging and silicon processing significantly increases
in complexity.
The panel will focus on the semiconductor roadmap, the barriers
and changes facing silicon technology, increasing problem of high
barrier to entry for small companies, the "integration"
of silicon, assembly, test and EMS companies and the general trends
and health of the industry.

Future
of Communication Industry and Rising Opportunities
ABSTRACT
Given
the anemic global capital spending environment and the excess capacity
situation at the core of the network, the communications panel will
focus on the following three areas: 1) investment trends and growth
opportunities in the access/last mile arena, 2) incremental and
evolutionary new technologies that are likely to develop and ramp
into volume over the next two years in this area and 3) the dynamics
that are likely to occur within the communications food chain as
these changes take place. The panel will seek to identify both the
market sectors that are likely to see growth over the next two years
and further identify the segment of the food chain that is likely
to benefit the most as a result.

Biotechnology; Present status & future opportunities
ABSTRACT
The
panel discusses "The Convergence of Advanced Materials Science
with Electrical and Tissue Engineering in The Future Diagnosis and
Treatment of Diseases." Managing diseases such as cancer and
HIV requires the use of advanced technologies to more specifically
diagnose and treat them. The challenges faced by doctors include
early and accurate diagnosis followed by specific treatments that
minimize the loss of normal tissue or body function while increasing
the patient's length and quality of life. New advances in materials
science, combined with electrical and tissue engineering are creating
new options for doctors and new challenges for the world's regulatory
bodies such as the FDA. Today, we have invited leaders in medical
technology and advanced materials to discuss some of these challenges
and trends in the new emerging
area of combination products.
